Ponni Sugars (Erode)

Ponni Sugars operates in the sugar industry producing sugar from sugarcane. The company has access to relatively low cost cane supplies that provides it with some buffer during the industry’s persistent cyclical downturns. The company has reported moderate growth in revenues over the last five years but operating profits (and losses) have been erratic.  It reported 15cr of operating profits on revenues of about 270cr under depressed operating conditions (see below).  It operated with a moderate net debt load of about 15cr but this is set to increase substantially over the next few years (see below). The company intends to invest 110cr in increasing capacity via debt funding in 2012, which may increase its financial risk profile.   It also intends to invest heavily in a power co-generation project.  These additional capital expenditures will reduce free cash flows, at least over the medium term. Rasi Electrodes

Rasi Electrodes is in the business of manufacturing welding electrodes and trading in copper coated mild steel (CCMS) wires. The company has a reasonably good brand image in certain of its segments. The company has reported reasonable growth in revenues over the last five years but the operating profits have remained largely the same.  It reported about 2cr of operating profits on revenues of about 21cr in the last financial year while employing modest financial leverage. The business is exposed to rising steel and rutile prices.  It also incurs heavy working capital investments resulting in hits to its operating cash flows.  Moreover, it will require heavy capital expenditure in the future as a result of PSU customers requiring it to operate with more of its own manufacturing facilities.  This will result in lower free cash flows, at least over the next few years. Anjani Synthetics operated in the textile industry and is in the business of manufacturing printed fabrics. The company has reported growing operating profits on growing revenues over the last five years – reporting 14cr of operating profits on 280cr of revenues in the last financial year. It employed an uncomfortably high debt load in relation to accounting net worth as well as earnings.  Moreover, it has used up significant amounts of cash in aggregate over the last five years (both operationally and for capital expenditure) requiring substantial additional financing including a large equity raising exercise in 2007.  Perhaps management may be considered shrewd for raising equity cheaply during the 2007 bull market – but this didn’t really help the former minority shareholder. Interfit Techno is in the business of manufacturing stainless steel pipe fittings, ball valves etc. for the construction industry.  It generated 85% of its revenues from the Middle East. The company has reported marginal operating profits in last five years with a recent spurt in revenues and profits in the last couple of years – reporting about 3cr of operating profits on revenues of about 25cr.  It operated with a moderate debt load. The company, however, had accumulated losses over the last ten years – a former BIFR case - and it is only on its way to working itself out of it.  This is a serious adverse point against the competence of management in this business.  Minority shareholders need to convince themselves that the underlying causes of poor past performance have been remedied for good rather than covered up by a temporary spurt in business activity. NGL Fine Chem operates in the pharmaceutical industry and is in the business of manufacturing bulk drugs and finished dosages. The company has reported stable operating profits on rising revenues over the last five years indicating a bit of margin compression during that period.  It reported operating profits of around 5cr on revenues of about 35cr in the last financial year.  It generated this using moderate debt. The company, however, has also reported negative free cash flows (operating – investing cash flows) in aggregate over the last five years requiring additional debt to finance the capital expenditure.  It would need to generate commensurate future profits to justify the excess capital expenditure. The company reported stable operating profits on similarly stable revenue over the last five years with a spurt in revenues in the last financial year – reporting about 11cr of operating profits on about 100cr of revenues.  It employed moderate debt in relation to accounting net worth to accomplish the performance. The company has, however, generated negative free cash flows in the last five years (a combination of operating cash outflows and capital expenditure)  requiring additional equity and debt financing – thereby diluting former minority shareholders and increasing the financial risk of their investments. The business is primarily exposed to price rises in steel (principal raw material).  It is also exposed to significant power shortages and persistent labour wage rises. DHP India

DHP India is in the business of manufacturing LPG Pressure Regulators. The company has shown reasonable growth in revenues and operating profitability in the last five years – reporting about 4cr in operating profits on 24cr of revenues in the last financial year.  It operated with modest leverage of 3cr (as at 31 st March, 2010). The company, however, has not generated much free cash flows (operating cash flows – investing cash flows) in the recent past. It is exposed to price rises in its raw materials (brass, zinc etc.) and seems to operate in a low-value product category that has infrequent demand (from an individual customer’s perspective).  It is also heavily exposed to foreign exchange movements (US$ and GBP) since it exports all of its finished products.

Vikas WSP

Vikas WSP is in the business of producing guar gum powder, which is used primarily in food products and also for oil drilling activities.   It claims to be the leading producer of guar gum polymers in the world with customers such as Nestle, Mars, Heinz, Sara Lee, Unilever and CSM. The company has shown consistent growth in profitability and revenues over the years with 145 crores in operating profits on 550 crores in revenues in the last 12 months.  It also sports modest debt on its balance sheet. It hasn’t, however, generated free cash flows (operating cash flows – investing cash flows) over the last seven years due to excessive capital expenditure and expansion programmes.  This has been financed by debt financing and a particularly large preferential allotment of equity to promoters in 2008.
